Bhutan’s entry system is unlike anywhere else, and understanding it early makes planning painless. Here is the current picture.
You must book through a licensed operator. With the exception of citizens of India, Bangladesh, and the Maldives, every visitor must travel on an itinerary arranged through a Tourism Council of Bhutan–accredited agency. You cannot arrive independently. Dorji Wellness handles the entire process on your behalf.
The Sustainable Development Fee (SDF). The SDF is currently USD 100 per person, per night. It is not a tax in the ordinary sense — it directly funds Bhutan’s free healthcare, free education, and its constitutional commitment to remain carbon-negative. Children receive discounts, and under-fives are typically exempt.
The visa itself. Once your itinerary is confirmed and the SDF paid, we submit your e-visa application using your passport details. Processing usually takes about five working days. You’ll receive an electronic clearance to travel; the physical visa is stamped into your passport on arrival at Paro International Airport.
What it covers. The SDF is separate from your tour cost (accommodation, guide, transport, meals). Together they make Bhutan a considered, all-inclusive journey rather than a budget free-for-all — which is precisely the point.
