Top 5 Bhutan Treks for Beginners

July 16, 2026

You don’t need mountaineering experience to trek in Bhutan — but you do need realistic expectations about altitude and pace. Here are five routes that reward effort without requiring it.

1. Druk Path Trek

Five days, moderate difficulty. The classic introduction — alpine lakes, ridgeline camps, and views of Jomolhari without needing a full expedition to earn them.

2. Bumdra Trek

Two to three days, easier pace. A short trek ending with a dramatic descent to Paro Taktsang — a rewarding way to combine trekking with Bhutan’s most iconic site.

3. Phobjikha Valley Day Hikes

Half-day to full-day options, minimal elevation gain. Less a “trek” and more a series of gentle nature walks through one of Bhutan’s most beautiful valleys — ideal if you want scenery without serious exertion.

4. Dagala Thousand Lakes Trek

Four to five days, moderate. Quieter than the Druk Path, passing dozens of high-altitude lakes with a genuine sense of solitude.

5. Gangtey Nature Trail

A single day, very easy. A short, well-marked trail through Phobjikha’s pine forests and open meadows — a good final trek for anyone easing into the altitude before something longer.

“Start with Bumdra. If you love it, everything longer than that just gives you more of what you already liked.”
